You Send Me
Written by Sam Cooke
Trivia
- L.C. Cooke is mentioned as official author, because in this way Specialty
wouldn't get the money with the song. Sam Cooke was in dispute with his
label about song rights.
- reached #1 in R&B and Pop charts in 1957 on december 2.
First date on the charts was October 28. It stayed on the charts for 15
weeks.
- He did the song on the Ed Sullivan show on november 3,
1957, but only a few seconds because the show ended. He did it again on
december 1, 1958.
- During the May 1957 session Specialty Owner Art Rupe
stormed in a session and objected to Blackwells use of a white chorus. He
didn't think black singers and white soulful singers should mix. This
led to Rupe handing over the tapes of the session and Sam's contract in
exchange for any past or future royalties to Blackwell
- He also performed this song on the Mike Douglas Show
- Named on of the 500 most important pieces of music that
shaped Rock & Roll by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Lyrics / Chords
Darling you send me. I know you send me
Honest you do 3x
You thrill me, I know you thrill me
Darling you thrill me
Honest you do
Honest you do
Honest you do
At first I thought it was infatuation
But it lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
to marry you and take you home
You Send Me 3x
Honest you do
Whenever I'm with you
Whenever I'm near you
Honest you do
I know when you hold me,
whenever you kiss me
Covered By
- Anka, Paul
- Ayers, Roy (interesting version of the song,
it's not always clear that is actually is "You Send Me", nice
interplay of voices)
- Jesse Belvin
- Brewer, Theresa
- this was one of the first covers of You Send Me, getting
higher on the charts than Sam's own version. Possibly because she was white.
On a radio-show (Marty Faye in Chicago) Bumps Blackwell attacked her for
singing this song and almost mimicking Sam note for note.
