Reviews
- Composer Harlan Howard was also a
widely recorded country & western singer, although I have no knowledge
if he himself ever made a version of this song, but, like so many songs
emanating from the South at this time c&w was definitely influencing
soul music. In 1962, Esther Phillips (when she still was prefixed as "Little")
had shown the way with her treatment of 'Release Me', and although there
were straight-up, no-nonsense, black country singers, (Charlie Pride and O B
McClinton), R&B and soul artists generally transformed these songs into
the way they wanted them to be, freely appropriating yet another element
from the vast reservoir of indiginous American musical genres. The melody
might be country, but the inflection and delivery would be strictly soul all
the way. James Carr's emotional treatment, over a comparatively gentle
backing, is one which has all classic characteristics of the Memphis sound.

Lyrics
/ Chords
If she seems cold and bitter I beg of you
Just stop and consider what my baby's gone through
Don't be quick to condemn her for things she said
Just remember life turned her that way
She's been and stepped and walked on so so many times
Oh I hate to admit it but that last footprint was mine
She was crying when first I met her she cries more each day
But don't blame her life turned her that way
I'm so sorry about
Yes I Am
Please Forgive
So sorry about it
didn't mean to hurt you baby
sorry about it
please forgive me
