Backside Text

When we decided to do a "blues" album with Sam Cooke, we got together dozens of publishers' folders containing the old blues runes that have become semi-classics of the business. As we pored over these one evening with Sam, we could see something troubling him. To our question, Sam answered, "these songs are all right, I guess, but they're not my kinda blues."

To understand this statement, you have to understand a little bit about Sam Cooke. He is a young man. He has been brought up in a new generation of music, and within this new music, he has created his own style and sound. Sam Cooke is gifted with that rare ability to be an individual performer and interpreter of music. Still, his repertoire is drawn from the music of the past decre or so, music that he has grown up with and that he knows best.

Sam Cooke has found the blues in the most unexpected of all places . . . right on our own backyard, so to speak. He has taken the current standards that we have daneed or hummed to so many times, without thinking of the lyrical meaning, and has given them a fresh meaning. What could be sadder, really, than a young man pleading, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore..." or, "Noboby Knows When You're Down And Out." Many a time, a crowded dance floor has been happily jumping with the sounds of Out In The Cold Again, or But Not For Me, with not one couple thinking about the message contained in these songs, Sam Cooke makes you think about it as he digs deep into the lyric and gives you the message in no uncertain terms. Chances are, you will think of these tunes as "blues" from now on. And they are, as Sam says... "That's my kinda blues."
