A Great talent of the Recording World was lost the morning of December 11, 1964 when Sam Cooke was killed in a shooting incident in a Los Angeles Motel. Sam was at the peak of his career when this tragedy struck.
Sam was born in Chicago, Illinois (1) in 1935 (2). The son of a minister, Sam sang gospel in his church choir from an early age till he reached his teens. He then branched out and joined the gospel group the Soul Stirrers. Then later he was the lead singer for the Pilgrim Travellers (3), a group which also featured vocalist Lou Rawls.
When he broke into the pop field in 1957 he had an immediate smash hit with his first recording on Keen Records, “You Send Me.” Sam continued with success after success, right up till his untimely death in 1964. He was one of the most important recording artists of his time.
This album does not feature the songs which Sam Cooke made famous (except for “Everybody Loves To Cha Cha (4))”. Instead, we hear another side of him, the soulful sensitive Sam Cooke. Many of the selections on this album are songs that the late, great Billie Holiday made famous, including “God Bless The Child” and “Good Morning Heartaches.” This album of standards gives us change to listen to Sam’s very sensitive interpretation of each song. It’s a tribute to an artist such as Sam Cooke who can sing a standard song, and leave his own unique and individual imprint on it.
The life of the legendary Sam Cooke known as “Mr. Soul” was cut short, but his memory and his recordings will live on for as long as people want to listen to good music.
